Cocotropic Review Summary

We have never properly reviewed a product like Cocotropic before. It is essentially a form of supercharged coffee, containing various substances which enhance mental function. Some of you may have heard of Bulletproof coffee before; well, this is a bit like that, except more like a supplement.

All things considered, we think this looks like a really innovative, interesting, and potentially great little product. It isn’t a comprehensive nootropic stack like we usually deal with here.

But even so, this stuff might help you get a slightly better nights sleep than you are right now, and for some of you, that will be the biggest favor you can do for your brain.

Full Cocotropic Review

We’ve been saying for some time that nootropic drinks are going to be the next big thing. Well, it seems that the market is already producing lots of really interesting products along those lines. The latest one to come to our attention is Wild Foods Cocotropic.

Unlike some of the other nootropic drinks we have already looked at on this site, Cocotropic isn’t a kind of supercharged, brain-boosting energy supplement. Rather, it is more like supercharged cocoa.

Cocotropic is designed to be very versatile; the Wild Foods website suggests putting it into protein shakes, adding a spoon-full to your morning ‘butter coffee’ (they know their audience), or just enjoying it as a hot cup of cocoa before bedtime.

So what is this stuff supposed to do? Is it just cocoa?

Wild Foods Cocotropic Review

Cocotropic is essentially a very high quality cocoa powder with added herb and plant extracts. The idea is that drinking a cup of this stuff on a daily basis will help you de-stress, get more restful sleep, and ultimately to improve your cognitive function for the long-term.

Although we usually review more comprehensive, potent nootropic stacks on this site, we think that many of our readers would get an enormous benefit from simply getting more sleep.

For some of you, getting an extra hour or two of deep, restful sleep will do more for your brain than any nootropic.

As such, we think Cocotropic is an excellent product in theory.

In theory.

Does it work in practice?

Does it represent good value for money?

Is it right for me?

Is it safe?

We’re sure all of these questions run through your mind when considering a new supplement. We’re going to try to put all of these to bed for you. Here is our full Wild Foods Cocotropic review. As with all products, we’ll be starting with the formula itself.

Cocotropic Formula

Let’s take a look at the Wild Foods Cocotropic formula, if it is fair to talk about a product like Cocotropic having a “formula” per se. As we said, this is much more like a regular, if incredibly enhanced, consumer product than it is like a comprehensive nootropic stack.

Here is the Cocotropic label:

WIld Foods Cocotropic Ingredients

One thing we’re really impressed with is the fact that all of the ingredients are listed here alongside their individual serving sizes.

Many products like Cocotropic will just list their ingredients as part of a homogeneous proprietary blend. Yet this is very unhelpful, as the effectiveness of all natural nootropics is determined by their doses.

So, let’s take a brief look at each ingredient in Cocotropic and see if it can really deliver on any of the benefits claimed by Wild Foods.

Ingredients Review – Why Cocoa?

The most interesting ingredient in Cocotropic is the Wild Cocoa Powder itself. In each serving, we get 5790mg of organic wild cocoa powder.

While many enthusiastic health food bloggers attribute all kinds of wonderful properties to cocoa, we don’t think there is anything particularly exotic or mysterious about how cocoa benefits you.

It contains small amounts of theobromine and caffeine. Theobromine is very similar to caffeine in how it works in the human body, except it is many times weaker than caffeine. Neither one is present in large enough quantities to keep you up at night. Cocoa also contains small amounts of antioxidants, procyanidins, and other compounds which are thought to improve general health and longevity.

Can it help with cognitive function at all?

Well, perhaps slightly. One property that cocoa seems to have is that it can improve blood flow, which in turn can increase the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to brain cells.

This study found that cocoa fed to smokers acutely improved blood flow primarily through increasing arterial dilation. However, the effect seems very mild.

Another, perhaps more powerful effect of cocoa is its ability to improve subjective feelings of happiness and well-being.

Most of you probably know that chocolate makes us feel good. Some of this is down to the sugar and fat in most chocolates. Yet few of you probably know that the cocoa in chocolate actually has a profound effect on our mood.

This study found that cocoa has some potent anxiety reducing properties. So while cocoa may not affect cognition directly, it can keep you feeling calm, satisfied, and better able to relax.

Importantly, the effects of long-term, consistent use seem to be real, albeit quite mild.

Other Ingredients

Let’s start with the Reishi Mushroom

This stuff has been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries (this name is Japanese). Most people consume Reishi as tea. It is often prescribed by traditional Asian medical practitioners for an incredibly wide variety of reasons, from helping with anxiety to bolstering the immune system after a prolonged illness.

While it often turns out that “traditional medicine” really means “misunderstood medicine”, this is one of the cases where it seems to be right on the money.

Several robust scientific studies have found that Reishi is able to significantly improve subjective well-being and reduce feelings of chronic fatigue.

Many online health bloggers also wax lyrical about the anecdotal evidence for this stuff being an immune system-booster. We’ll hold off until we see a conclusive scientific study, but this looks like an interesting one for the future.

Reishi Mushroom Cocotropic Ingredients

Maca Powder is heralded by some as a powerful testosterone booster. This, of course, is garbage. No natural substances can genuinely increase free testosterone (except testosterone itself, and Vitamin D if deficient).

Wild Foods have included it in Cocotropic for many reasons: its supposed ability to boost libido, subjective well-being, improve memory, and to enhance mental performance.

To date we have never seen conclusive evidence that Maca can do any of these things aside from boosting libido (which is not what Cocotropic is advertised for). One study does show that Maca potentially improves subjective well-being, but results here are pretty unconvincing.

Cocotropic Ingredients Maca Root Powder

Mucuna Puriens is often used as both a testosterone booster and as a way to increase dopamine levels. Obviously it has been included in Cocotropic for the latter purpose.

Wild Foods have used an extract here, meaning that it contains a relatively higher concentration of L-Dopa. This is a crucial precursor to dopamine; the motivation and reward neurotransmitter.

Studies have failed to conclusively show that Mucuna Puriens supplementation increases dopamine levels, although theoretically the link is clear. At least one study found a relationship, but whether this is causal or not remains to be established.

Finally, we come to Tumeric

Cocotropic Tumeric Content

If you’re a regular reader of health food blogs and magazines, you’ll probably be sick of seeing this stuff.

According to some people, there’s just no end to what Tumeric can do for you. From improving fertility to killing cancer, Tumeric is said by some to be a panacea for all that ails you.

If only that were so.

Many of the claims made by health food bloggers are largely unsubstantiated.

However, regular Tumeric consumption can indeed benefit you in numerous ways, from reducing inflammation to helping with the digestive process. The effects are simply very mild compared to those promised by its loudest proponents.

Cocotropic Side Effects – Is There A Risk?

If you’ve come looking for a detailed review of Cocotropic, then you’ll no doubt be wondering if there’s any chance of nasty side effects.

Well, as you might imagine from a cocoa drink, the answer here is no, there is no major side effect risk with this nootropic drink.

The caffeine and theobromine content is so low in cocoa that you are unlikely to experience any ill effects from consuming even 5g of cocoa. They are both stimulants, but only caffeine is a stimulant in practice; theobromine is a stimulant in name only as it is just so damn weak.

However, that doesn’t mean there is no risk whatsoever.

Reishi Mushroom has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, but consuming it in this quantity in this form is not widely done. Nor has it been thoroughly researched to our knowledge.

The main concern, however, is with Mucuna Puriens. Side effects associated with Mucuna usage can be quite serious.

More serious long-term side effects can include a heightened risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease!

It is incredibly important that you speak to your doctor before using a new supplement like Cocotropic. While it is not a powerful nootropic supplement loaded with ingredients, it does contain substances which you are not used to consuming. Never take medical advice form the internet, and never try to treat a genuine illness with supplements. Talk to your doctor!

Cocotropic Review Conclusion

We’re really pleased with this product. We were a little skeptical going into this Wild Foods Cocotropic review, but we had to remind ourselves that this is not a professional-grade nootropic supplement.

It is designed as a kind of upgraded cocoa to help you unwind and get a better nights sleep.

For that purpose, it seems pretty good.

It contains some ingredients that we would definitely remove from the formula. Maca and Mucuna are unproven and over-hyped in our eyes.

However, it also contains a very interesting ingredient which we never see in nootropic stacks but which could prove to be incredibly effective for reducing anxiety and bolstering your immune system. We’re talking about the Reishi Mushroom of course.

If you’re looking for a powerful nootropic to significantly enhance your memory, focus, lucidity and mood, then this isn’t it.

If you;re looking to try a different cocoa before bed and you have trouble getting a good nights sleep, then this could be just what you’re looking for. As we said earlier, many of our readers could do with sorting out their sleeping pattern before they start to think about nootropics. You need to walk before you can run!
